Los Cabos Sees 19 Percent Increase in U.S. Travelers This Year

Los Cabos Sees 19 Percent Increase in U.S. Travelers This Year

Suffice it to say that Los Cabos is having a pretty good year. The destination welcomed 19 percent more U.S. travelers January through February than it did during the same period last year, according Eduardo Segura, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. "We're going to be ending the year with pretty good numbers," he said.

From January to August the destination welcomed 1.2 million national and international visitors. Those numbers are expected to rise even further, said Segura, with a range of new direct flights, including new Aeromexico service from New York-JFK to Los Cabos on Dec. 21. "The direct flight from JFK is a great opportunity for us to open up this market," said Segura.

Another airline that is expected to open new markets is Allegiant between Las Vegas and Los Cabos in June. "We've found that people from Pacific Asia extend their trips when they go to Los Angeles or Las Vegas." Segura said.

Other new air developments that were implemented in June include AirTran flights between Denver and Los Cabos; daily Southwest flights between Austin, Tex., and Los Cabos through AirTran; and Spirit Airlines' service between Dallas and San Jose del Cabo.

Hotel developments also continue unabated. Hyatt Place will open later this year, as will Secrets Puerto Los Cabos. In 2014, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve will open and a JW Marriott Los Cabos in 2015. El Ganzo opened earlier this year. "There's a whole range of products for everyone," said Seguro.

On the sports front, two new golf courses are scheduled to open next year. Quivira Los Cabos will be an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course that is expected to have the most oceanfront play than any other Los Cabos course. The 18-hole El Cardonal at Diamonte, Tiger Woods' first course outside the U.S. will complement the Dunes Course at Diamonte.
